A recent UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) conference in Malaysian Borneo became the first Asia-Pacific gathering to explore e-tourism potential in the region.

The two day meeting attracted international tourism experts, government officials, business representatives, technology specialists and provided a forum for exploring the use of ICT tools to promote tourism and for exchanging experiences and best practices in this area.

The conference focussed on information and communication technology (ICT) and its impact and role in the development of the tourism sector, including management of information and networking, e-payments and e-branding; ICT and sustainable tourism; using ICT to build partnerships between small- and mid-sized tourism firms; and tourism e-marketing.

e-Marketing and e-Payments

What is e-marketing and its importance in the overall marketing strategy of a tourism destination? What does e-marketing strategy consist of, related to the image to be presented, slogans, etc.? What are existing examples of successful e-marketing strategies? These were just a few of the questions that were addressed during this section of the conference.

This workshop comprised the following presentations:

Innovation and Knowledge Management

Speakers looked at the importance of adopting innovative models for strategic re-positioning and the ways in which tourism organisations can create and stimulate drivers for innovation in the industry.

The workshop on this topic included the following presentations:

  • Presentation Four by Professor Dr. François Bédard of the University of Quebec in Montreal looked at new business models for destinations. This presentation has a file size of 117 KB.
  • Presentation Five by UNESCAP looked at the role of knowledge management in pro-poor tourism. This presentation has a file size of 410 KB.
  • Presentation Six, by Sanjay Nadkarni of UNESCAP, examined the role of the network of Asia-Pacific Education and Training Institutes in Tourism (APETIT). This presentation has a file size of 330 KB.

ICT - Its Impact and Role in Tourism

The conference evaluated the economic opportunities that are created when ICT is harnessed in an efficient and cost-effective way, and also at the challenges faced when introducing ICT into tourism management.

A popular part of the conference, presentations on this topic included:

  • Presentation Seven by Auggaphol Brickshawana of Thailand Tourism offered examples of his organisation's own experiences of harnessing ICT. This presentation has a file size of 2.5 MB.
  • Presentation Eight by Barry Ridgway, Government Industry Director of Microsoft Asia Pacific offered a supplier's viewpoint on the use of ICT in the travel and tourism industry. This presentation has a file size of 2 MB.
  • Presentation Nine by by Professor Dr. François Bédard of the University of Quebec in Montreal focussed on Quebec's Destination Management System and its regional expansion programme. This presentation has a file size of 2.72 MB.

ICT for Sustainable Tourism

Delegates were invited to be receptive to new trends such as ecotourism, adventure or cultural tourism through ICT. They explored methods of sensitising strategies and tourist behaviour to environmental issues through the use of technology.

Presentations included:

  • Presentation Ten by Richard Leete, resident representative of UNDP Malaysia (United Nations Development Programme), focussed on the conference topic of e-tourism for growth: matching market efficiency and social inclusion. This presentation has a file size of 75 KB.
  • Presentation Eleven by Albert Teo, Managing Director, Borneo Eco Tours and Ecoclub member, presented a case study on the use of ICT and sustainable tourism. This presentation has a file size of 1.7 MB.

e-Marketing and Tourism

This element of the conference examined both the classical product-push approach to marketing to a more consumer-centric method, and evaluated the growth benefits of an efficient e-marketing strategy.
